Long time, no blogging- I know, I know... But I promise I have a very good reason why.

Many of you may have noticed a change in my Twitter & Instagram handles. I'm proud to announce that I've been working on a new blog! While this little corner of the internet has been my home for the past two years (really?), I've decided to move on. I'm so thankful for the contacts I've made through this blog & hope you all will join me in my new endeavors. I just feel it's time to move on to new pastures & recenter my blogging self.

These days you'll be able to find me over at The Modest Adventurer. While it's still a lifestyle blog, TMA will be more of a travel heavy site. Anyone who has followed this site for any amount of time can tell you that travel is my biggest passion & I've felt I've just got a little lost here. Time for a fresh start on a fresh site focusing on my biggest obsession!

Be sure to check out the new site & you can still find me creeping around social media here, here, & here. Thanks so much for all your support!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04436194331917541189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825505913731524015.post-49541032836212677832015-05-29T10:00:00.000-06:002015-05-29T10:00:05.897-06:00Project Pan: May Update

Another month down & several products have gone with it. This month was a productive one on the Project Pan front as I finished off several items. The more I rid of, the harder I find it to keep from filling those empty spots in my cabinet. I did manage to pick up a new shampoo & conditioner this month, even though I have several 'backups' waiting underneath the bathroom sink. I'm blaming it on the fact that I lightened my hair for summer & needed a color protecting set to help the color last longer. An excuse? Sure, but it is what it is... Without further ado, this month's products:

Pixi Correction Concentrate in "Brightening Peach": I have pretty intense blue circles under my eyes & I use this to help cancel out some of those tones before applying concealer. It isn't a miracle product but I have yet to find one that is for this purpose.

MAC Strobe Cream: I originally purchased this to use as a cream highlighter but found I liked it better as a primer. It helps give my skin a healthy glow underneath the mattifying foundation I've been using lately. I can't say that I'll be repurchasing it though.

Origins Super Spot Remover: I've relied on this product for a few years now to help diminish any spots that pop up. It is fairly pricey for a tiny bottle so I haven't repurchased it after finishing this one. I'm considering trying out a more inexpensive one to compare the results. If you don't mind the price tag, it's definitely worth the splurge though.

Bioderma Sebium Cleansing Gel: I love Bioderma as a whole but had never tried this cleanser. I saw it in a pharmacy when we were in Portugal & decided to try it out. It was a decent cleanser but nothing spectacular. Considering the difficulty obtaining Bioderma in the States, it isn't worth the hassle of repurchasing.

Kiehl's Oil-Free Facial Toner: I somehow manage to mention this in 99% of my beauty posts so there's nothing new for me to say on it. It should just be sign that I obsessively chat about it.

Not Your Mother's Knotty to Nice Conditioning Detangler: I love NYM (see rave here) & had high hopes for this product, especially since my hair tends to tangle super easily. It left my hair feeling slightly greasy so I wasn't crazy about it. I prefer this leave-in conditioner from NYM.

First Aid Beauty Anti-Redness Serum: Another product I've raved about over & over. I'm taking a break from it currently but I'm sure I'll be repurchasing it again soon.

Soap & Glory You Won't Believe Your Eyes moisture serum: I did a whole post on this product a few months ago & still think it's a great moisturizing eye serum.

Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Gel: I purchased this product after hearing Claire talk about it in a YouTube video. It's supposedly to help target dark spots & correct any discolorations. It's specifically for sensitive skin so I was excited. It was definitely a pricey piece & I didn't see results that could justify that price tag. I'm sure there are less expensive items out there that do a better job. I just haven't found them yet.

Tarte bronzer in "Park Ave Princess": As far as I'm concerned, this is a holy grail bronzer for the fair skinned girls out there. It does an excellent job warming up your skin without leaving it muddy.

There you have it- this month's Project Pan products! I can already see my collection shrinking to a much more manageable size.

What products did you finish this month?

Unless you've been living under a rock, you're likely to have heard about the superfruit acai berry (pronounced a-sigh-e). These berries are native to Brazil & are packed full of antioxidants, fiber, & omega fatty acids. You can buy acai in a variety of forms at your local health-food store but I prefer the frozen packets as it's easiest to throw into a smoothie or breakfast bowl.

Making an acai bowl couldn't be easier:

1) Toss two frozen bananas in the blender.

2) Run two packs of Sambazon acai berry superfruit (I prefer the unsweetened variety & find mine at Whole Foods) under water for about a minute. Remove from the packets & throw into the blender with the banana.

3) Add a splash of water, just enough to get the contents moving. Too much & your mixture will be too thin & soupy.

4) Blend on high until the mixture is smooth & creamy.

5) Place into bowl & top with your favorite items. I prefer whatever fruit I have on hand, my homemade granola, & a few unsalted nuts.

Tips:

I always keep a ziploc full of chopped, frozen bananas in the freezer to throw into smoothies or breakfast bowls. If you have bananas that are getting a little too ripe for your liking, chop them up & freeze for a sweet additive to your next smoothie.

I also have found that using a chilled bowl to put your acai mixture into works best. The mixture can quickly melt & become more like acai soup otherwise.

What are your favorite ways to enjoy this superfruit?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04436194331917541189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825505913731524015.post-29716296538612973482015-05-24T13:30:00.000-06:002015-05-24T13:30:14.039-06:005 Fresh Summer Juice Recipes

Fresh juice screams summertime to me & I find there's no better way to start my day. I'll usually have one big juicing session to prep a few jars to enjoy over the next couple of days.

They'll keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just give them a good shake before drinking. For those of you that are new to juicing, these 5 are perfect to start as they are all heavily fruit based so you don't get that "earthy" taste. Once you get used to it you can start including more vegetables in your mixes for added nutrients.

Minty Mush Melon:

2 apples

3 oranges

1/4 cantaloupe

handful of mint

Strawberry Rhubarb Surprise:

8 strawberries

4" piece of rhubarb

1 orange

1/2 pineapple

Apple Cantaloupe Delight:

2 apples

1/4 cantaloupe

6-8 kale leaves

Lemon Lime Twist:

1 lemon

1 lime

2 pears

2 apples

2 carrots

1" piece of ginger

Minty Tropics:

2 mangoes

1/2 pineapple

2 limes

1 orange

20 mint leaves

I use this juicer from Breville but there are many less expensive options.

Next time you're looking to enjoy a little summer in your glass, give one of these juices a try!

What are some of your favorite juices?

Okay, so remember how I promised to be better at this whole blogging thing- like a month ago? Yeeeeah, someone didn't make good on that promise.

If I'm being honest I haven't had the time with the whole new work schedule. When I have had time, I really haven't felt a desire to blog. I've been trying to soak up what little time I have with Brad now & that is oftentimes spent scooting all over creation while house hunting. Let's just say that I am SO over the whole house hunting process. One would think it would be exciting & should be an enjoyable time but I'm finding it to be more frustrating & stressful. Brad & I generally get about 30 minutes a day to see each other & during that time we're both rushing to get ready for bed so on my off days I get a few hours in the evening time with him. The last thing I've been interested in doing is forcing myself to sit down & write a few blog posts when I haven't felt too creative or like I've had a whole lot to chat about. Apologies!

But I digress- today I wanted to update you on April's new conquers. I'm finding myself consistently dwindling down some of my beauty products & I'm loving it! I did splurge & purchase a couple of new tubes of mascara since I was out & I used a gift card to pick up a new Kat Von D tattoo liner. I've been out of black liquid liner for some time now & I finally caved & had to replace it. Aside from those couple of products, I've still done well at not buying products without finishing off what I have. It's like a daily "shop my stash" & I find things I'd forgotten about nearly every day. Here's an update on the things I cleared out this month:

Kiehl's Midnight RecoveryConcentrate: I really love applying this facial oil at night to keep my skin hydrated & help diminish lines & wrinkles. It's a pretty pricey product & I was absolutely sick when I dropped the glass bottle on the bathroom floor & shattered it. I was almost finished with it so it wasn't a complete waste but I was still upset none the less.

E.L.F. blush/bronzer duo: I've had this for a couple of years now & had finished off the bronzer some time back. I finally finished the blush in this duo. Since I depotted it a while back I can't remember the name of the duo but I believe it was St. Lucia (going off the website photos). For just a couple of bucks you really can't beat the color payoff of this product. However, I really didn't like the sizable pieces of chunky glitter in the blush. I can't see myself repurchasing this.

First Aid Beauty face cleanser: If you've been reading this blog for some time you'll know that I absolutely love the FAB brand as a whole. This cleanser is a stripped down, fragrance-free cleanser that I always find myself going back to. It will definitely be returning to my possession as soon as I finish off my other cleansers.

Clinique bottom lash mascara: The first time I purchased this mascara I really loved it because it defined my lower lashes. It really separated them without clumping each lash. It was a subtle way to make my lower lashes pop. I purchased this second tube but found after being without it for some time that my opinion had changed. If you're looking for something subtle you may be a fan of this product, but if you're looking for full lashes then I'd steer clear.

Origins High Potency Night-a-Mins moisturizer: The more I delve into the Origins brand the more I love it! This night time moisturizer really left my skin hydrated without being too thick & overpowering. Plus it smells great!

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On eyeliner: I finished off this black liner & have to say for the price tag, it just isn't justifiable. While it does go on smooth, without tugging your eye, I did notice that it transfers. I have a hard time buying any high end eyeliner as I feel that the drug store offers plenty of good options for a fraction of the price.

Maybelline Falsies mascara: Clearly my opinion on mascara changes with time because I used to really like this mascara as well but found that if it's not waterproof then no thanks! I picked up a tube of the waterproof formula to give it another go & see if maybe I just need to stick with waterproof exclusively to hold my curl.

There you have it- this month's update of all the products I finished up. Another month of Project Pan in the books!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04436194331917541189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825505913731524015.post-47870303253622030162015-04-06T10:00:00.000-06:002015-04-06T10:00:10.767-06:00Project Pan: March Update

Another month has passed & with it I've managed to dwindle down a few more beauty products.

Macadamia Rejuvenating Shampoo: I came across this shampoo at TJ Maxx one day. I love the deep repair hair masque so I thought I'd give the shampoo a go. Unfortunately, I was less impressed with this product. It left my hair with a slight greasy feel to it thanks to the oil so I never really felt like my hair was clean.

After much debate I bit the bullet & purchased the (oh-so-expensive) full size bottle. I'm not sure what happened here but my opinion has changed. I wasn't able to tell any difference in the appearance of my dark spots after going through a whole bottle. Perhaps I'll go for another sample size to test the results but at this point I can't justify spending the money on this product for the results.

Hard Candy Fox in a Box in "Truth or Dare": This bronzer/blush combo ended up breaking into pieces once I started making progress on the bronzer. I wasn't impressed with the payoff of the blush & found the bronzer super hard to blend for a natural look. Fortunately it wasn't expensive so I wasn't too upset over it breaking into a million little pieces.

Bioderma Sensibio H20: Daily staple. This is the only product I use (aside from the occasional coconut oil for waterproof mascara) to remove my makeup. I swear by it & it's the only thing I plan to ever use for makeup removal.

Lush Dirty Shower Gel: What can you say about a shower gel? It cleaned the dirt off? It did it's job & I enjoyed the smell. I love that Lush products are made from natural ingredients so you never have to worry about any nasty stuff being thrown in there.

RoC Restoring Night Cream: This product seems to be a bit too intense for someone of my age range. It also didn't jive well with my sensitive skin so it's getting passed on to my mom. Maybe she'll find it better suited to her night cream needs.

Real Techniques sponge: I've been using this sponge for some time now & even though I've washed it plenty, I'm sure my skin would appreciate tossing it for a fresh one. I do love using this complexion sponge to help blend in my foundation or any cream products. It gives them a more natural look. I definitely prefer the $6 price tag over the overpriced Beauty Blender.

Laura Mercier mineral powder: I was super excited to finally finish off this hefty tub of mineral foundation. For a powder, it has decent coverage without making you look too powdery or cakey. I love how light weight it feels. I'll consider repurchasing it in the future but for now I'll be finishing off a few more of my foundations.

Maybelline Falsies mascara: Another mascara has bitten the dust. I used to be a big fan of this. Ever since I made the migration over to waterproof though, I seem to have lost the love I had for regular mascaras. This tube seemed to dry out & become chunky really quickly so it got the toss.

That's all the products I managed to finish off this month. So far this year I've made good on my promise to not repurchase any beauty products. I'm starting to make some serious progress filtering through all my products & can't wait to get my collection down to a manageable size.

Hello blog world! Long time, no see. If you read any of my posts over on the Alabama Women Bloggers site this month, you'll know that March was a complete whirlwind. While it was absolute chaos, it was a month full of blessings.

I was so honored to be named the AWB Blogger of the Month for March. This gave me the opportunity the guest post on their site all month. It was also my first time writing editorial posts, which was a new but exciting challenge. If you haven't checked out their site, you can do so here. Be sure to read all my posts regarding luck!

This month also happens to be mine & Brad's wedding anniversary. Each year we take a big trip to celebrate. We schlepped all over Europe for two weeks & it was excellent. (Posts coming soon!)

Brad & I were both blessed with promotions at work which meant a huge change in responsibilities & work hours for me. I'm slowly getting used to the different assignment & it's still surreal realizing that I'm responsible for my workers now, rather than being the subordinate. Eek!

Probably the biggest change this month has been moving. We finally sold our house & with it, I've had to bid farewell to my first home. I'm so excited to move on to a new home that Brad & I can build together, but it is slightly bittersweet saying goodbye to my first big purchase of adulthood. Now we're living out of boxes that have been scattered between two houses, a storage center, & four cars. I find myself constantly looking for items but hopefully soon enough we'll find a new house & can settle down. Goodbye, little yellow house!

Thanks for your patience during my absence. I promise to be better at this whole blogging thing from here on out *crosses heart*. Stick around for some new & exciting things!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04436194331917541189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825505913731524015.post-72345709416918127112015-03-23T17:00:00.000-06:002015-03-23T17:00:00.494-06:00Alabama Women Bloggers Collaboration Pt. 4

I'm back for my fourth & final installment regarding "luck" on the Alabama Women Bloggers site. Thanks to Kari & all the ladies of AWB for having me all month long! My first guest post spot was challenging but a lot of fun!
Now that the temperatures are starting to warm I find myself not as interested in curling up with a cup of hot tea (pause for gasps). That's not to say that I don't still luuuuv tea in any shape or form. Lately I've been enjoying iced tea to get my fix. This blended iced latte is perfect for these warmer days.
Blended Iced Earl Grey Latte:
*adapted from Thug Kitchen

2 cups vanilla coconut milk
1/2 cup water
4 bags Earl Grey tea
1-2 teaspoons honey (to taste)
2 cups ice
1/2 frozen banana

Note: You could use any tea that you prefer (chai would be delicious)

In a small saucepan, heat coconut milk & water over medium heat until bubbles form around edges. Turn off heat & add tea bags. Let bags steep for 10 minutes. Take bags out & let cool in fridge for 1.5 hours. Add honey, ice, banana, & tea mix into blender & run until smooth.

I love enjoying this frothy, icy beverage with a side of ginger tea biscuits!

I really love granola for tossing into breakfast bowls or topping off a cup of yogurt. Unfortunately, most store bought granola contains more sugar than oats. Even though companies try to market it as healthy & waistline friendly, once you look at the nutrition label you'll see that couldn't be farther from the truth.
I whipped up a batch of this granola recently & use it in the mornings to accompany a cup of Chobani or to top my chia seed bowls. Sometimes I'll even add a little coconut milk to it & eat as a cereal.

Honey Granola:
*adapted from Thug Kitchen

3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1/2 cup chopped almonds
1/2 cup honey
1/3 cup olive oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup goji berries

Note: once you've created your base of oats, honey, & oil- the other ingredients are interchangeable. Throw in whatever nuts or dried fruits you prefer.

Heat oven to 300 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix together oats, seeds, & nuts in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix honey, olive oil, & vanilla. Pour this over oat mixture & stir until thoroughly coated. Add the cinnamon & salt & stir. Pour mixture onto baking sheet & spread evenly. Place in oven for 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to cook evenly. Once mixture looks toasted, stir in dried fruit & let cool. Store in airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
(You can read my raves here & here.) I've recently been trying out the Overnight Biological Peel. I was interested in giving peels a go but knowing how this ginger's skin reacts to everything I was a bit hesitant.

After using this product for a few weeks, I'm happy to report no negative reactions. I just apply an even layer over my face before bed. In the morning I wash it off with warm water. The formula is gentle enough that it doesn't make my skin all red & flaky (attractive), but it gently exfoliates & replenishes the surface to help even my skin tone. It's even gentle enough that you can use it up to three times a week. With continued use, I'm hoping the surface of my skin will be smoother & pores less visible. I'm already pleased with the results!
I have a tendency to save workout ideas on my phone with the intention of trying them out later. Fast forward 7 months & as I'm browsing the depths of my phone I come across them again. Hence, today's Fitness Friday post!

As much as <strike>loathe</strike> love my T25 dvds, I feel like they're not targeting my abs as much as I'd like. Considering Shaun T is constantly yelling at me "Use your core!" throughout the workout, I'm starting to believe perhaps I'm not doing something right. It definitely can't be the occasional post-workout salted caramels that are catching up to me... None the less, I've decided to incorporate some more ab exercises into my routine.

I love monthly challenges that target particular areas. I've done a monthly squat challenge in the past & really enjoyed it. These challenges are great for measuring your improvement as they slowly increase the reps of each exercise. I found this pic saved on my phone & even though it says June, we're using it for March (because we're rebels like that...) If you're looking to tighten up your core, give this monthly challenge a try!

Last month I talked about my plans to participant in a year of Project Pan. I'm only one month in & already getting rid of things left & right! I made a pact with myself that I wouldn't purge my collection by just tossing unloved items. For the most part, I've done well with that. I did manage to toss one product this month that I'm just not pleased with. Here are a few mini-reviews:

NYC Bronzer in "Sunny": This is a great, inexpensive bronzer for my fellow pale skinned gals. It goes on lightly so you can build up to the desired level & it won't make you appear muddy & orange.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in "Bad to the Bronze": I was pretty friggin' excited to finally finish one of these cream shadows. I've had this bad boy for seriously like 2 years (maybe not so hygenic) & never thought I would finish it. I really loved this product for an eyeshadow base or as a stand alone product.

Jemma Kidd Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Creme in "Iced Gold": I'm pretty sure they don't even make this product anymore but I have really enjoyed using this as an everyday highlight. I have just a little bit more before this will be another empty! I prefer cream products during the winter to help bring a little hydration back into my skin.

Hard Candy Baked Blush in "Living Doll": I'm scrubbing the bare bottom of this product to get my money's worth but it should finish up in the next few days. This product really could be considered a blush & highlight in one. It's a flushed pink color that, quite honestly, isn't my fave.

EOS lip balm in "Sweet Mint": I used to be semi-obsessed with EOS lip balms, particularly the sweet mint. Ok so I love anything mint. This egg shaped lip balm is also on it's last leg but I definitely don't think I'll be repurchasing it. I've decided EOS is one of those companies where the balm really dehydrates your lips in order to get you to use the product more often. At least that's how I feel after each application. But it still smells delicious!

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear nail polish in "Blueberry Blast": When I saw this color in the store I immediately thought "I have to have that!" I love Sally Hansen nail polishes & have always been impressed with their quality. Once I got this home I lost a little faith in ole' Sally. This was a super streaky, thin color that took at least 4 coats to become somewhat opaque. Once you got it to an opaque consistency it was so thick & sticky there was no hope of ever getting it to dry. It's the one product I allowed myself to toss even though it wasn't used up.

Tarte Emphaseyes Cream Eyeshadow in "Shimmering Golden Beige": Unfortunately I didn't get a whole lot of use out of this product because it dried up so fast. I'm always sure to store all my cream products upside down to ensure they last longer, but it didn't help in this case. The few times I did use this cream eyeshadow I was really disappointed in the patchiness & uneven coverage it left on my lids.

Revlon Colorstay gel eyeliner in "Black": This was another dried up product that got the toss. I used this quite a bit for tight-lining my upper lash line. The color dries quickly & lasts all day but it tends to smudge by the end of the day.

Kat von D Tattoo Liner in "Trooper": The really cool thing about this product is that it's actually a brush applicator, like a paint brush so you always get a really precise point. Unfortunately, mine seems to have dried up or run out of product super fast. I felt like I only used this liner for a month or two, not even every day, & it went kaput. For the price tag I feel like it should last a bit longer.

Covergirl Lastblast Volume waterproof mascara: I'm pretty sure this will always be my holy grail mascara. I just have yet to find anything that lengthens, separates, & curls my lashes as well as this mascara.

ELF clear brow gel: You can't beat this $1 product to keep your brows in place all day!

Garnier Anti-dark Circle roller: I am SO happy to announce that I FINALLY finished this product. You definitely get your money's worth from this product because it seems like it never ends! It's a much thinner concealer (which I liked) but didn't have great coverage for my dark circles (which I didn't like).

Go Smile On the Go teeth whitening pen: I picked this up on Groupon a while back & started using it recently. I have ultra-sensitive teeth & was really happy to know that this didn't make them hurt. I used it nightly & was able to see a difference within a week or two.

Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral matte palette: I purchased this palette about a year ago at Target & it has been the best little kit. It was inexpensive & has lasted forever. For a drugstore product, it has a huge range of matte shadows that can give you a variety of looks. I even use it to fill in my brows. It's bittersweet seeing that I'm hitting pan on (or completely using up) several of the shadows.

It feels great being able to toss these products & make room in my drawers. I can't wait to see what products I'm able to finish up next month!

I've talked a lot about the troubles with my under eye area in the past. If you've somehow managed to miss out on all my gripes, let me catch you up with the Cliff's Notes version: we're talking desert level dry skin. Fortunately, I recently found my oasis.

I picked up a tube of Soap & Glory's "You Won't Believe Your Eyes" moisture serum on a whim as I was perusing the pages of Sephora a few months ago. It was on clearance & I'm constantly searching for a HG eye product so I figured Why not? I recently started using it & have been iiiim-pressed with how great this product is at hydrating my undereyes. This product is a serum so it's much thinner than a cream & sinks in quickly. Soap & Glory claim this product will help eliminate puffiness. I fortunately don't suffer from puffy undereyes so I can't attest to that, but I really enjoy the small roller balls that have a cooling effect. I've also noticed that I've been using this product for a month or so & I've barely made a dent in it. It only takes a small dab so it lasts forever. My favorite part? Because it's so thin & sinks in so quickly, I can use it right before applying my makeup.

If you suffer from dry undereyes & are looking for a hydrating product, give this one a try!
Is there anything better than a refreshing post-workout smoothie? Well, ok- maybe lots of things. I'm looking at you, doughnuts... But in the interest of not reversing all the hard work you just did, here's a healthy & delicious smoothie recipe that's perfect for an after workout boost.

Both pineapple & strawberries have anti-inflammatory benefits, support immune health, & are full of antioxidants like Vitamin C. Just one cup of pineapple can give you 105% of your Vitamin C requirements. Strawberries also contain ellagic acid & flavonoids which help fight bad cholesterol. Both strawberries & bananas are rich in potassium which lowers blood pressure. Bananas also contain B6, manganese, & Vitamin C. While
bananas are high in sugar, they won't cause a blood sugar spike &
can sooth the digestive track & enhance friendly gut bacteria
(yummy). Best of all? They're all delicious! Give this smoothie a try for a delicious & healthy treat!

Strawberry Pineapple Protein Smoothie:
1/2 cup pineapple
1/4 cup strawberries
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp flax seed (optional)

Blend all items together for about an minute (or until smooth) & enjoy!
Mainly because when I'm experiencing a fairly severe stroke & sweating buckets these girls are swishing their picture perfect ponytails while barely breaking a sweat. I'm looking at you, Anna Renderer. Sure, you look cute in your ad worthy Lululemon attire & perky attitude but homegirl's over here strugglin' & creating enough friction with these thighs to start a fire...

That being said- Anna is one of the personal trainer gurus found over on PopSugar Fitness & she knows her stuff. I recently tried out this 5 minute leg workout (read: 5 minutes! Who can't handle that?!?). Well, I'm here to say that I can't... Ok, I got through it but let's just say it was not pretty. Nor was it pretty the next day when I had to waddle around with sore thighs. This simple 5 minute workout definitely is effective & with continued use I'm sure I'll be seeing some change in these thighs!

Does anyone not love Diane Keaton? (If you say you don't, then we certainly can't be friends...) I recently read her book Let's Just Say It Wasn't Pretty & fell even more in love with this beautiful woman!

I've always found Diane Keaton to be a hilarious actress (First Wives Club & Something's Gotta Give are both must sees!) but this book really gives you a different look at her. I drive around for 8 hours a day at work & let's be honest- there's only so many times I can hear Katy Perry's newest 'hit' without wanting to reach through the radio & HIT her (that would take only one time as I can't stand her music). I often use this as an opportunity to listen to audiobooks, which is exactly how I tackled this one. The best part? Diane actually reads the book so you get a genuine feel for her emotions through each chapter. I guess it says something as you're sitting in your car crying at a red light because you've heard Diane's voice crack at a particularly deep moment in the book...

A recurring theme throughout the book is beauty. She discusses insecurities, girl on girl hate, style, aging gracefully (& not so much), & learning to embrace your own quirks. All of which are covered, of course, in a hilarious way. Even if you're not a Diane Keaton fan (blasphemy!), I think everyone can appreciate this book. While there are some parts that make it something of a biography, she uses these episodes as a means of getting her point across. Think 'moral of the story'...

Let's Just Say It Wasn't Pretty is a must-read for all women. You'll find yourself laughing through tears & learning to embrace your own unique traits. You'll definitely take some life lessons away from this book. It also reminded me how lovably, adorable Diane Keaton is- can I call her mom?!? She uses her (hilarious) wisdom to chronicle how to stay true to yourself in this beauty obsessed world. If you're looking for a quick read that will have you laughing while learning to love yourself, give this one a go.
Cha-Cha-Cha-Chia...

I've recently been craving cereal for breakfast, as it used to be what I lived off of. However, I know that those <strike>delicious</strike> sugary bowls aren't exactly my waist line's friend. This chia seed breakfast bowl is an excellent healthy alternative that's just as easy as pouring a bowl of cereal.

It only takes two minutes to prep your bowl & place it in the refrigerator overnight so it'll be ready to go in the morning! This recipe makes a hearty two portions so you can divide it up into smaller containers for breakfast on the run. The best part? Each serving is chop full of fiber, calcium, omega, & protein! It will keep you full & energized all morning long. Move over, Cheerios!

Chia Seed Breakfast Bowl:

1/4 cup chia seeds

2 cups milk of your choice (I prefer coconut but you could use soy, almond, hemp, etc)

1 tsp vanilla

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Use a whisk to prevent clumping or place ingredients in a high powered blender for a thicker consistency. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge overnight. Top with your choice of items (nuts, bananas, pineapple, cinnamon). I opted for diced mango, kiwi, & goji berries. If you're using unsweetened milk you may consider adding a couple of tablespoons of maple syrup for sweetener.

Last weekend was my birthday & per usual I was insistent it would not be spent at work or moping around the house. It's a given that tears will be shed on my birthday (despite it being on my 30 by 30 list to get over that crap). I knew that this would be my last birthday of my 20s & there would be many a blue moment (yeah, yeah- woe is me...) I figured if I'm going to cry, I might as well do it in a cool & interesting town. Enter Asheville...

I'd heard many great things about this bohemian, artsy mecca. This town is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains & is undoubtedly a foodie paradise. Asheville also boasts more breweries per capita & is surrounded by an overwhelming amount of natural beauty. I decided this would be the perfect birthday getaway. You know this girl loves a Groupon & you better believe that's my first stop when planning a trip. I found a good deal for a two night stay inclusive of daily breakfast & a $50 spa credit. Score.

We made the 6 hour journey Friday morning & arrived at the historic White Gate Inn. This quaint little b&b offered the perfect amount of quirkiness (we were greeted by an eccentric lady singing us dated showtunes) while still offering that homey, 'grandma's house' vibe.

If I'm being honest, this was probably my least favorite hotel out of all of our Groupon trips (which is a lot). The one staff member we encountered during our 2.5 days there was friendly & helpful, providing us with a city map. While it was exactly what I would have expected for a bed & breakfast- think an overwhelming amount of floral motif plastered across anything that would sit still long enough, it definitely wasn't my cup of tea. This was my first b&b experience & I've learned I'm just not social enough for the inn arena. I rather get out & explore the town than sit around the dinner table with 10-12 people I don't know for each meal of the day. To each their own. The inn was clean enough but the shower did leave a little something to be desired & we had to keep all the windows open in our room whenever we were in it. I am cold-natured & spent the entire weekend sweating as soon as we entered the doors of the inn. It made for impossible sleeping our first night as we were told we were not allowed to touch the radiators in the room. Even with the windows open to the room in the middle of January it was still upwards of 80 degrees- so much so that I found some of my makeup products had melted when I pulled them out of my bag! I will say that we both enjoyed our spa time- Brad enjoyed an hour long deep tissue massage as I opted for a facial, upper body massage, & foot reflexology treatment. It was a great start to our weekend there, although it did make us completely worthless for the remainder of Friday night.

Once we were able to pry ourselves from the massage tables, we ventured out for a stroll about the town & dinner. Being the foodie that I am, I had thoroughly researched many eateries in the area. As luck would have it, we threw that list out the window & stumbled across the White Duck Taco Shop.

We each got a few different tacos to sample. If you ever find yourself wandering into this joint, I highly recommend the Bangkok shrimp, lamb gyro, & Thai peanut chicken. Plus who doesn't love a place that serves drinks in Mason jars? duh...
After wandering around the town for a bit in the cold (um, y'all- Asheville is wind-y), we made our way back to the inn to rest up for a fun filled Saturday. And by fun, of course I mean more eating... The next morning we hit up the renowned Tupelo Honey Cafe & have mercy was that place excellent!

We both decided upon omelets. Brad had the Shoo Mercy which involved jalapenos, ham, fried green tomatoes, bacon, & pimento cheese & I opted for the Samlette (salmon, capers, cream cheese, & asparagus). The goat cheese grits were slap-yo-mama good & the giant biscuits were phenomenal when topped with homemade jam & whipped peach butter. You read that right- whipped. peach. butter.

When we were finally able to roll ourselves away from the table we marched on through downtown to several shops. At the top of my list was the Spice & Tea Exchange- whut. Um, yeah. I could have easily spent many hours (& dollars) there. It's really no surprise that I love tea & have to exercise serious self-control whenever it is involved. Brad & I managed to escape with a slightly less than ridiculous amount of items. The staff was super friendly & if you can dream it- chance's are they have it, & then some...
As though I hadn't made it apparent enough that homegirl likes her food- we also made our way to Olive & Kickin', a gourmet olive oil & balsamic vinegar tasting gallery. I know, I know- you should be jealous. We coated our mouths with an absurd amount of both & bought a few delicious bottles of each. Once we left that little slice of heaven, we decided we needed something to wash all those samples down. We headed across the street to Double D's Coffee & Desserts. This kitchy double decker bus sits on a street corner offering walk-up or 'dine-in' service. We made our way to the upper level for a unique view of Biltmore Ave.
We spent the afternoon browsing more shops & wandering around the town, where we stumbled across the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar. This bibliophile paradise offers hours of endless entertainment. If I lived in Asheville I'd be spending many a quite afternoon curled up in this dog-friendly library with a good book & a cup of hot tea.
We wound up our evening with a visit to Ben's Tune-Up for ramen bowls & pork dumplings. The service was less than impressive but the food made it worth the while. In keeping with the Asheville theme, this restaurant boasted eccentric decor, scrumptious cuisine, & a crowded venue. I'd definitely recommend Ben's but this hole in the wall joint fills quickly so be sure to hit them up early to avoid the long waits.
The next morning we hit up Sunny Point Cafe for more delicious brunch before hitting the road. Sidenote: does anyone know how I can make brunching into a career? This family owned restaurant prides itself in farm-to-table products, so much so that they have an onsite garden where they grow many of their ingredients. I had a stack of sinfully delicious organic carrot hot cakes. I'm determined to find a recipe for them because oh. dear. heavens. were they ever exquisite. Sadly, we bid farewell to Asheville but not before hitting up the Blueridge Parkway on our way out. Unfortunately, we were only able to drive about 8-10 miles as we found the roadway closed just as the views were getting good.
While I still did find myself in a melancholy state on my birthday, it was definitely lessened in this impressive little mountain town. If you're looking for a unconventional getaway spot, consider Asheville. I've had some intense cabin fever the past few weeks with all the rain & cold weather. While I've spent a lot of time reading (& by reading I mean watching countless hours of Netflix...) & cleaning, I recently decided to also spend some time playing Susie Homemaker. I browsed several of my cookbooks to make a meal plan for the week. While digging through my Vitamix starter book I found a recipe for homemade peanut butter.

I love peanut butter but I'm also aware that it's not exactly the healthiest thing for you, especially store bought ones. Fortunately, this recipe is free of any additives or sugar. It consists of nothing but peanuts so you can't get much more natural than that! We picked up a couple of pounds of unsalted, roasted peanuts from The Nut Shop but you could just use a bag from your local grocer. I opted for these because they're fresher since they were roasted that same day. The most tedious part is definitely shelling all the nuts. Thankfully I had Netflix to keep me company...

Homemade Peanut Butter:
3 cups of roasted, unsalted shelled peanuts

Place the peanuts into a Vitamix or other high performance blender. Set it to Variable 1 & turn the machine on while slowly increasing the speed to Variable 10, then to High. Make sure to keep the nuts pressed down into the blades with a tamper. Do not blend for more than 2 minutes or you run the risk of overheating the blender. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge.

This should keep for a couple of weeks but you could also freeze it for longer storage. This same technique could be applied to any variety of nut. I found mine slightly bland since it was unsalted so you could also consider throwing in a dash of salt while blending. If you wanted to get really creative, you could also throw in some cinnamon or raisins for a fancy nut butter!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04436194331917541189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825505913731524015.post-79288119196929894422015-01-13T09:26:00.000-06:002015-01-13T09:26:41.076-06:00Project Pan 2015

I am a hoarder.
But only when it comes to beauty products.
It's no secret here that I love sampling lots of new little beauty goodies. Unfortunately I tend to find new ones to try before I finish the old. Therein lies the problem as my bathroom cabinets & makeup storage are overrun with half used items. So while I don't make resolutions per se- I have decided that 2015 is going to be a year where I lay down the law on new purchases. A 'project pan' of sorts. I'm just really looking to minimize the amount of clutter in my life. Once I have gone through all the extras, I'll have a better idea of the products I really love & can just repurchase those as needed. I've decided that I won't allow myself to purchase any new items until I've completely used up all the running ones I have in my possession (i.e. no new mascara until I've finished the six, yes SIX- that are in my drawer currently).

I'm already dreading this as beauty products are my weakness. I don't find myself shopping for clothes or jewelry or shoes. But give me an hour of down time & I'll quickly find myself online browsing the pages of Sephora. This proves to be especially challenging as I already have a Sephora gift card I received for Christmas that is just burning a hole in my pocket. Hopefully I'll be able to hold strong & clean out those products though!

What is your area of shopping weakness?

We've been casually seeing each other for some time & I think it's high time we had "the talk". What are we? Where is this going? Don't heave a sigh of exasperation. You had to have known this was coming... I'd like to think it's a little something more than the place you stop by for a quick recipe or craft project for your ever growing Pinterest board. I've decided it's time we get to know each other a little better. And by "we" I mean me...

What better way to do that than a list of assorted (& possibly unwanted) facts about yours truly? You're welcome...

1) I've lived my entire life in Alabama- most of it in one town, yet I feel no attachment to this state & have often felt like I was born in the wrong place to the wrong generation.

2) I am wholeheartedly a dog person. I think cats are snooty & pompous. Plus you can never really tell what they're thinking or plotting & that really freaks me out.

3) I think I'm a regular riot. Hysterical. My husband often reminds me that I'm the only one that's laughing.

4) Long sleeves that go past my wrists make me feel claustrophobic.

5) I've jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. Alone. Seven times.

6) One dimple. That's all I have. One dimple in my left cheek.

7) My mother used to make all of mine & my sister's outfits when we were little. She was always sure to save a little extra fabric to make us matching hairbows for each outfit. Naturally, we were dressed alike for most of our childhood. She also made us "bubble suits" which were essentially giant onesies that buttoned up the back, worn with (of course) Sam & Libby loafers. This really complicated matters for a kindergartener. Bathroom trips required a buddy & an early learned ability to control my bladder.

8) I have a terrible poker face. I am a very animated, expressive person. Oftentimes to a fault- I don't hide my thoughts or feelings well. Please don't ask me if I like your new <strike>terrible</strike> haircut.

9) I took piano lessons for 7 years growing up. I took oboe lessons for 2. Despite that, I can't read music today.

10) Instagram is the only social media that I actually enjoy. I could dispose of all the rest but I only keep them because my husband tags me daily in cute animal videos...

11) Animal videos make my day. Like this one. Any animal doing any sort of funny/cute/stupid stunt. I'm set.

12) I'm really great at starting things. Unfortunately, I'm not so great at finishing them. (It should probably be noted that I couldn't finish typing this fact before moving on to the next.)

13) I could eat cheese all day, every day. Granted, I'd be very sick but it'd be worth it. The stinkier, the better.

14) I used to be fairly talented at photography. I even attended a prestigious summer art program for it two years in a row. Once I upgraded to a DSLR I completely lost all working knowledge of a camera. I'm attempting to relearn the operations but it's a slow process.
30) My least favorite thing in the world are goodbyes. I can't handle them. I become an emotional mess.

31) I climbed a hay bale once because I always had this romantic notion of life in the country, romping through fields & climbing bales. It was one of my worst ideas as the bale was wrapped in briars & I ended up with countless scratches & a severe rash up & down both of my legs for several weeks. Romance = over.

32) Whenever I got a new pair of sneakers growing up I used to sleep in them the first night. I'm still tempted to do it to this day.

33) I. love. naps. Maybe it's because I never get them but I think they're one of the greatest things in the world. I'm still kicking myself for not taking full advantage of them when I was a kid.
34) October is hands-down my favorite month & it has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween. I just love when the nights begin to turn cooler & the leaves begin to change. I live for pumpkin carving & brisk evenings spent sipping hot tea by the firepit with my two fur babies.

35) I consider myself somewhat of a lost soul. I still have yet to find something that I'm wholly passionate about. Something that is soul consuming, light-a-fire-under-you incredible. I have yet to find a career that I could deeply enjoy & feel rewarded by. A town or state that suits my anxious spirit. A hobby I can stick with. A cause I can dive head first into. I'm still looking for my passion in this great big world. It's partly saddening because I haven't found my niche at this point in my life. But it's also really exciting because there's always something to look for. A restless soul indeed.
So now that we've got those oddities out of the way we can move on. If you'll still have me?
